Vampire Myths Around the World I have discovered through research that there are many different vampire myths. In fact it seems that most every culture has it’s own bloodsucker myth.Some are good, but most are evil.The variety is endless, magic, rising from the dead, preying on corpses in the graveyards, orgies, terrorizing children and mothers giving birth, destroying animals and crops.Each myth has specific bits of their culture imbued within it.Irish folklore has a female fairy that behaves in a vampiric fashion and lures men off to their doom.A vampire in the Ukraine feeds upon large quantities of fish. Many of the myths have started from explaining birth defects, forms of insanity, many diseases, and reasons for death, famine and other tragedies. Along the morbidly humorous side, many people were buried alive, believed to be dead and that would also add to the myths of vampires.It was due to this specific occurrence that people began to set up “alert systems” so that if the person was still alive, they would be able to let the one watching over them know and be exhumed from their grave.--Jenn Gilbert ****Research by Jenn Gilbert and Melissa "Sarafina" Ward
